Lions Sweep Lev

On Monday, the stars aligned: Winthrop matched up against second-place Leverett in Football, Softball and Frisbee, each of which were playoff elimination games. The Lions rolled, dominating frisbee and softball and coming form behind to win football. On Thursday, Winthrop completed the sweep with a Volleyball B victory over Leverett to close out an undefeated regular season.

Although much is still in flux, this day may eventually be thought of as the crucial point in this year's race for the Straus. Winthrop looks to finish strong as the end swiftly approaches.

Soccer Defeats Kirkland

Winthrop single-handedly knocked Kirkland out of the double-elimination Soccer tournament after handing the boars their second loss. This time, the game was much closer (2-1 instead of 6-1) but goals from Alex Beyer and Ali Welch pulled the Lions ahead. Captain Demren Sinik continues to be an assist machine; the Lions take on Leverett and look to crush the Bunnies once and for all.

Winthrop C is Dominant

It was a blowout. The C team is so deep, so strong, so skilled that some have started to compare them to the 2013-2014 San Antonio Spurs squad. They play good fundamental basketball, click as a team, share the ball and beat the crap out of their opponents. The C team looks to continue their excellent play in next week's Finals match-up against Kirkland.

Tough Loss for Basketball B

Cabot was running scared, so they went out and found some new players. After a 16 point win over Cabot in the regular season, Winthrop came into the semifinal looking for another big win. Unfortunately, Cabot came to play with some new pieces that they picked up at the trade deadline and they scraped a 3 point win over Winthrop. Down big with only a few minutes to go, Winthrop fought back behind the hot hand of Will MacPhee and CJ Christian. They had a chance to tie the game up with 20 seconds left, but missed a contested 3. All around, a very solid season and a bright future for Winthrop B.

Can't Touch Our Squash Team

It's never even close when it comes to Winthrop Squash. The reigning champs marched to an easy win against Lowell in the Semifinals behind a solid team performance. Winthrop looks to win their third straight IM Squash championship on Monday night.

Lions Sweep Lev

It's been a big week for Winthrop IMs. The Lions faced 2nd place Leverett in three elimination games this week, and came into Broomball tonight with a 1-1 record in those games. Captain and leading scorer Jack Allen netted a goal 10 seconds into the game, and it was all Winthrop from there. Lev couldn't manage to get past the energetic Laura Schell and the defensive duo of Juan Perdomo and Matt DiSorbo (who have not allowed a goal when together on the ice), and didn't generate a shot on goal the entire game. Allen put away his second goal with a minute left to make the final score 2-0. With this win, Winthrop advances and eliminates the Bunnies from the playoffs; the Lions will face #1 seed Eliot next week.

LIONS HAVE ICE IN VEINS

The Winthrop Basketball B team won an extraordinarily key contest Tuesday night against Straus Cup contender Leverett, 35-33.  The high stakes for the game were made higher when no.4 Leverett A somehow knocked off the had-been-undefeated top-ranked Winthrop A squad on the same court two hours earlier.  And the Lions’ play matched the stakes.  Adam “The Machine” Mohsen-Breen had a career night, absolutely owning the paint with rebounds, defense, and offensive productivity.  The staple backcourt of CJ Christian, Mark Bode, Bryant Huggins, Trevor Noon, and co-captains Michael Liu and Will MacPhee maintained a high level of play as always against explosive Bunnies.  The Lions rode a 5-9 point lead all game until Lev made a run near the end to tie it up.  With 8 seconds left, Huggins fed The Machine, who was fouled by four (4) defenders putting up a shot.  He made both free throws to make it a two point game, and the Lions closed the door with 6 seconds of mistake-free defense.

Winthrop falls to Lev

It felt a little bit like football. It was reffed a little but like football. It wasn't actually football. It was an incredibly physical game on Tuesday night, and despite a hard push to open the second half, Winthrop fell to Lev. The loss ends Winthrop's undefeated season and puts them out of the playoff. Winthrop loses star Nick Bookout next year, but has a lot of young talent in Jeff Huang and Theo Lebryk going forward.

Broomball Wins, Caps Undefeated Week in Winthrop

It was do-or-die for Broomball: a loss puts them at 1-3 and out of playoff contention, and a win bumps their record to 2-2 and gets them into the field. With the pressure on (and against Straus Cup rival Kirkland) Jack Allen had his best offensive game yet and sparked an offensive frenzy that produced 4 goals for the Lions. Laura Schell earned her first Broomball cap and was fantastic on the ice, putting home crosses from Allen and creating scoring opportunities of her own. With this win, Winthrop posts a perfect 6-0 record for the week, with wins in the Futsal tournament, Squash, Broomball and all 3 levels of Basketball. Things begin to heat up as playoffs for the winter sports loom.

Basketball C Clinches #1 Seed

Lowell forfeited on Thursday night, giving the Lions their 4th straight win and clinching the #1 seed in the 4-team playoff. Winthrop heads to the QRAC on Monday to face Cabot and attempt to close out their perfect season.

Basketball B gets Well-Deserved Win

In a 25 point win against Cabot, Winthrop showed excellent teamwork and poise for the majority of the game. On three consecutive possessions the team worked the ball into the post and kicked to Mark Bode for three, draining not one, not two, but three straight shots from beyond the arc. Bryant Huggins was key at the point guard position and finished well around the rim. A great effort all around by the Lions and the wins shoots them right back into playoff contention.

Basketball A Wins by 70

How's that for a Valentines day present? Winthrop was in love with the basket on Tuesday night and poured in 96 points on their way to what could possibly have been the most lopsided win in IM history. Cooper Bryan and Theo Lebryck voiced their pity for Kirkland after the game, saying "I feel bad." and "That sucked, dude." Dan Romero once again put on a strong defensive game and Gillermo Gomez thrived on the fast break. The Lions dominated from start to finish.

Winthrop Dominates Futsal

Winthrop seems to thrive in tournaments. The spikeball tournament - Champions. The Inner tube water polo tournament - Champions. Futsal was no different. Crown the lions king. Ali Welch had an unbelievable night and sacrificed both on and off the court for the team. Renan, Jackson and Bryant all played well and Demren returned in excellent form to lead Winthrop to victory. This win shoots Throp forwards in the IM standings.

Winthrop Broomball Defeats Dunster 1-0

Minutes after Straus Cup rival Leverett fell 2-1 to Mather, Winthrop took the ice to face a physical Dunster team. Despite constant offensive pressure from the Lions (Dunster notched only 1 shot on net), the game stayed scoreless until midway through the second half, when star midfielder Marissa Balleza finished off one of the best passing sequences of the game by sending a Jack Allen cross through the legs of the Dunster goalie. Midfielder Peter Tu suffered a mild back strain after colliding with a Dunster player, but the injury does not appear to be serious.

Winthrop A destroys Mather

In the last game of the regular season, Winthrop A defeated Mather A 71-37 to finish the season 4-0. Winthrop was without Jeff Huang tonight but Dan Romero stepped in to take his place and clicked well with the team. The Lions are looking forward to owning the post-season.

Winthrop Doubles Lead over Leverett

Two Winthrop Basketball Teams (A and C) managed to stay undefeated through last week, and a win from Squash helped to put some distance between Winthrop and second place Leverett in the Straus Cup Standings. Perhaps most notably, Nick Bookout (current Athlete of the Week) hit a buzzer beater to lift the Lions over Leverett in Basketball A. The current Winthrop lead is over 60 points, pending Broomball and Basketball (A and B) action this week, as well as the school-wide foosball tournament.

Basketball B Squad Not Usual Self in Loss to Scrappy Eliot

The Winthrop Basketball B team lost a tough game against Eliot Thursday night.  The Eliot team played aggressively, making some big shots against solid defense.  The other way, our Lions struggled to make our swing housing sorcery work.  Mark “Crunchtime” Bode, Jocelyn “More Like Jordan" Meyer, and Bryant “Bug’s Life" Huggins showed promising glimpses of their offensive productivity from last week while Adam “Big Guy” Mohsen-Breen, CJ “Quicker than Will” Christian, and Trevor “ Quarterback" Noon made solid contributions to the system.  Brooke “Narrow River” Istvan and Will MacPhee also provided some helpful support.  Michael “Showtime" Liu, sidelined due to injury, maintained the energy from the sideline.

Some days you shoot well, but others you don’t, and this day was the latter for the Pride.  Even with the lack of consistent offensive productivity, the squad played solid defense for all but around twelve minutes of the game, finding success in both man to man and zone systems.  Some highlights include an early block by “More Like Jordan” Meyer, an acrobatic transition reverse pivot layup by “Bug’s Life” Huggins, and an incredible 8-0 run down the stretch that catapulted the team back into the game.

The team will play Leverett next Thursday.

Bball C Moves Into First Place

Dudley C, fearing the post presence of dual big men Nicholas Larus-Stone and Juan Perdomo, forfeited tonight to give Winthrop it's third straight win. The Lions are the only undefeated team remaining in the C league and face Lowell next week.

Winthrop Squash rolls to another Win

The two-time defending champs defeated Lowell 3 matches to 2 at the Murr Center last night. Andrew Wang's tricky drop-shot absolutely obliterated his opponent and, despite some serving woes, Cooper Bryan sneaked out a victory. Peter Tu also made a cameo for an unknown reason, though players suspected that his heckling of Kat Cohen may have done more harm than good.

Bookout's Buzzer Beater Lifts Basketball A

With 1 second remaining on the game clock, Winthrop's Basketball A captain Nick Bookout drained a mid-range jumper to lift Winthrop over Lev 63-62. In what was a scrappy and hard fought game, Theo Lebryk had to leave the court with 8 minutes remaining to get three stitches above his left eye. Despite the injury Winthrop hung on for the win behind the heroics of Jeff Huang and their buzzer-beating captain.
